Sometimes you have to look past the movie for the good that it has to offer. Sometimes it’s just fun to make the characters in the movies seem real. And, sometimes you don’t even have to be able sing.

Winner of eleven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Beauty and the Beast is a sweeping commercial and critical success. Charles Dickens himself would have been proud to have made such a masterpiece. Based on the tragic story of a young women’s pursuit of the true love of her life, both emotionally and physically, the film revolves around the character Belle who befriends the poor wretch named Beast. The Beast suffers from an illness that leaves him a withered body, but his spirit lives on as an animal called Le Prince. Beauty and the Beast has the potential to evoke many emotions from both old and new audiences, with age defying performance by both stars, and heartfelt performances by their respective characters.

While most musical theater focuses more on synchronized sets and on how well the actors can lip sync, the Broadway musical is more concerned with lyrics and melodies. With that in mind, one might wonder how the movie came to be written and exactly how original the play is. Actually, the play was actually inspired by a real story. According to the account, an ancient princess wanted to create a link between the earthly and spiritual worlds by casting a spell on a goat. The goat didn’t respond however and instead ventured into another realm where she met a handsome young man who was the result of a quest he had undergone. When the young man expressed his desire to marry the princess, the goat went into a sleep and never returned.

The basic plot of the play is the search for the mythical kingdom of the fairy godmother who can bring the young man back to life, but since none of the characters from the story appear in the movie version, the play takes on the identity of the young man and his pursuit of the woman. The only connection between the musical and the story is the fact that both songs were recorded by accident on accident loans. So even though the plot of the movie may seem less original than the play, both are equally deserving of praise for their originality and artistry.
